Kinefinity has announced their “DRAGON killer,” the 6K KineMAX Camera. Designed to be modular and go head to head with you know who, the new KineMAX promises to shoot ultra high definition video at 6K and 4K resolutions at 50fps. It will record to SSD Mags in CinemaDNG and promises a dynamic range of up to 16 stops in 4K and 14 stops in 6K. But can it come in under RED’s Dragon Epic? And if it does, can it compete?

The KineMAX will also come in either Black and Metallic gray, with3 different kit options, though there’s no details on what those will be, nor is there any pricing at this time to hint at it.
Kinefinity also announced the new KineMINI 4K camera, which can shoot Raw and is likely an KineRaw Mini with an upgraded 4K sensor. The KineMINI has the following specs:
- CinemaDNG RAW (12bit /14bit), with transcoding options to ProRes 4:2:2 and Cineform Raw via Kinestation
- All supported formats:

– Apple ProRes 422 / 422 HQ / 422 LT
– Cineform RAW / YUV / 444

- Lenses supported EF / Nikon F / PL / B4
- Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) for it’s 4K sensor
- Can shoot in 4K, 2K and 1080p, with optional slow motion mode
- Offers up to 100 fps in 1080p, and 2K at 96fps, 4k 30FPS
- Optional slow motion mode
- 2 64GB SSD Mags
- SDI connections
- 2 USB3.0 connections
- 802.11AC WIFI with a possible iPhone app for remote control and monitor
The KineMini will be available in four separate packages, with the main body costing around $3000 US (man, that’s cheap) , with the optional dual 64 GB SSD Mags bringing it up to around $5800 US. Optional slow motion will cost around $650 to unlock, with the pricing on the Kinefinity KineStation transcoder yet to be determined, but last year’s model was around $3200. Currently, Kinefinity only had CGI mockups at the press conference of what the cameras will look like, but there’s talk that they plan on unveiling prototypes of both at NAB on April 7th.
Man, the price of getting into ultra high definition continues to plummet. Can ARRI, RED, and other upper tier cameras continue to offer 4K and above for five and six figure prices? Well, of course they can. But the great news is that the lower entry level allows indy shooters to add 4K and above to their quivers and gain the necessary experience to move up to the higher tiers as their skills develop. And that’s the beauty of technology in our industry, it does away with having to make compromises on your filmmaking due to budget.
