Panasonic to Announce GH4K Tomorrow

New images leaked

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

When Panasonic showed off a mockup of the GH4K during CES, I was kinda disappointed because there was no big presentation, no specs, no announcement, or even working prototype. Just a camera on display. Then talk started a few days ago that an announcement is coming, and it’s coming TOMORROW. And as if to drive the point home, still images were leaked to show us that yes, the GH4K is the real deal, and it’s coming soon.

gh4_zpsaba7cbafJust a rehash of what we believe the specs will be:

  •  16.05 Megapixel sensor, which incorporates new semi-conductor protection technology that promises to reduce noise and improve dynamic range.
  • quad core processor and Venus Engine
  • ISO up to 25,600
  • 12fps, 7.5 fps with continuous focusing
  • OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • OLED retractable LCD screen
  • UHS I class III SD card format
  • Depth From Defocusing (uses Panasonic lens database to fine tune AF!)
  • AF as fast as 0.07 seconds. 49 AF points
  • 4K video at 4096×2160 pixels and max frame rate of 96fps
  • Bit rate of up to 200Mbps
  • 4:2:2 10/8bit output
  • Timecode
  • Magnesium body
  • optional Interface Unit with 2 XLR, 4 SDI, micro HDMi output, color bar signal, audio reference signal, external time control
    – think of it as a proprietary Beachtek or Juicedlink

Bildschirmfoto2014-02-06um083211_zpsa1327917A quad-core processor?  My goodness!  That’s a super computer, gang!  And it has to be if it’s going to record ultra high definition video at up to 200 Mbps!  And it looks to be recording using the new Ultra AVC-Intra200 codec as well, which can harnass the UHS Class III write speeds, and according to sources, is the only way the camera can write full 4K at speed.  Otherwise it would bog down.

There’s no word on pricing just yet, though some have speculated it will run about $2,000.  That would be a stunning MSRP and would be aimed square at runners and gunners and GH3 users looking to upgrade.  And it would certainly put some pressure on Canon, who’s only 4K DSLR, the Canon 1D-C, costs seven and a half times that much.  And even though the announcement is likely to turn plenty of heads, I’m guessing we won’t actually see the GH4K in stores until at least the 4th quarter or maybe even next year.  Remember, it was a mockup on display at CES, not a working camera.  No matter, hopefully we’ll find out tomorrow when the GH4K is revealed 8pm PT / 4am London Time.

  1. Could be a game changer or a total flop. I’m hoping for a major game changer.
