A Brazilian Day in Cannes

By Christina Kotlar (doddleNEWS)

After the big Cannes Film Festival opening weekend, films and filmmakers of Brazil are highlighted as a country that will be talked about in the next few years with it being the host for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. In 2011 Egypt was the first country to be highlighted this way and this year it’s Brazil in the spotlight for Tuesday, May 22, 2012 with four films in the Official Selection.

The Music According to Antonio Carlos Jobim premiers as a classic montage film using archival photos, posters, album covers, sheet music and concert recordings. Screenwriter Miucha Buarque de Holanda, one of Antonio (Tom) Jobim’s closest friends from the days at Ipanema’s Bar Veloso, a local hangout of the 1970s where Vinicius de Moraes composed the Girl from Ipanema, contributed personal insights into the film inspiring one of most recognized and played songs to this day. The film is directed by Nelson Pereira dos Santos who previously directed a four-hour long documentary about songwriter-composer, Jobim for Brazilian television and his granddaughter, Dora Jobim. A timeless musical journey that represents a half century of Brazil.

Later that day, a musical fiesta– a gala dinner and concert – takes place at the Agora Pavilion, a venue for Opening Gala dinners, from 11 p.m. It’s located on the beach, surrounded by white, pointed tents, doubly surrounded by security and guest lists. So, if you don’t have an invite, I suspect, there’s little you can do because the wait line will be long, if allowed, and disappointing unless you meet someone ahead of time that can get you in.

That’s what happened during my first visit, one of our group, a filmmaker who won the Best Shorts award from the year before kept trying to call us to get to the party he had gotten into. It was all the way across the curved beachfront and we decided to ignore his constant calls and messages. It was late and too much trouble and we had to be off the boat, Habibi, the next morning by 9 a.m. Instead, we found the great burger place not far from the marina and while it was 3 a.m. or later, I still had the mindset to pack as much as I could before catching some shuteye. Our friend stopped calling.

The next morning, he showed up at the dock and tried to tell us who he was partying with all night long. Amid the tosses of baggage and cleaning our way out of the boat, he swaggered about, still under the influence of his association with the entire cast of Ocean’s 13. He sat between George Clooney and Brad Pitt for most of the evening while trying to call us to get ourselves over to where they were partying. Just goes to show, there are people you meet that might be able to get you into these parties, after parties and after, after parties. It all depends on whether or not you can physically get there before sunrise.

However, if you do get in, there will undoubtedly be great Bossa from Brazil music. The food and drink will flow everywhere and you never know who you will bump into. Here’s a taste of bossa music style that might come out of there from Yuri Turchyn’s Love Letters.
