Han Solo is quite possibly the most beloved character from the Star Wars saga, so it’s no wonder that when given the choice to write any Star Wars film he wanted, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan instantly settled on the character.
Josh Trank was originally slated to direct an unknown Star Wars standalone film (rumored to be about Boba Fett), which was to be released in 2018, but left the project (or was fired, depending on the story). That bumped up Kasdan’s Han Solo movie, and Lucasfilm scored 21 Jump Street’s Phil Lord & Chris Miller to direct it. Speaking with The L.A. Times, Kasdan revealed that the film is still in development, but showered praise on the directors saying:
“Those guys are geniuses in their own right, and they did something with ‘The Lego Movie’ that no one had ever seen. I think the Han movie is going to be crazy different, and I haven’t got a clue what it will be. We’re so far from putting it on film.”
“I think it won’t be the thing you’re worried about. It will not be like here is where he was born and this is how he was raised. I think what it will be is what was he like ten years earlier, ya know maybe a little earlier you’ll get a glimpse but… what formed the person we meet in the cantina? It is not so much about his specific history. It is about what makes a person like that? He’s not full formed in the cantina! Kurosawa once said ‘the heroes are the ones that are still changing and the villains are locked and petrified into what they are’ and Harrison embodies in Force Awakens someone that’s still not settled on who he is.”
After rewatching the Original Trilogy, his words ring very true. Han Solo actually has some of the most significant growth throughout the series, and if you try to watch A New Hope, while pretending not to know where he ends up in Return of the Jedi, he becomes a wild card. It’s just as probable he would turn all the Rebels into the Empire for the right price, as he would helping Luke, Leia and Old Ben to save the day.
How a character gets to be that way could be a fascinating story. If you’ve read the Han Solo trilogy from the Extended Universe (now called Legends), then you know how fantastic a Han Solo film set before A New Hope can be.
The Untitled Han Solo Anthology Film will premiere in theaters on May 25, 2018.
