Look up “frenemies” in the dictionary and you could see the Doctor and Missy.

UPDATE: Well it looks like we all fell for a head fake from Missy, or an over zealous reporter from Radio Times connected several out of context statements and concluded something different. But Michelle Gomez took to Twitter this afternoon to tell everyone that our favorite “frenemy” in the TARDIS isn’t going anywhere:

Let’s get this straight people. Never believe what you read. #missydontquit – Michelle Gomez on Twitter

So whether or not there will be a clean slate, it looks like the rumors of Missy’s regeneration were premature, or Missy has some nefarious scheme up her sleeve before the last episode!

With new showrunner Chris Chibnall coming in for season 12 of Doctor Who, and a new Doctor coming along with him, we’ve heard that there will be a clean slate on the show. Peter Capaldi is leaving with Steven Moffat, and we’ve heard that Pearle Mackie is only signed for one season. But now there’s news from the Master herself, that Missy will soon regenerate, as well.

“My pals are going so I’m going. Everybody’s leaving, so I’m going too. I mean, what would I do without Peter and Steven? Who would I be? Nah, it’s done now. It’s over. It’s the end of a chapter.” – Michelle Gomez, to Radio Times

Doctor Who (series 8) ep 11It’s not surprising that Missy would be going along. When David Tennant regenerated, John Simm’s Master had made a grand departure (some say more than once), and we wouldn’t see him again until he regenerated as Michelle Gomez’ Missy. But what I find interesting is that Gomez says “everyone” is leaving, giving great weight to the clean slate that is coming, and a whole new vision for the next series of Doctor Who.

[I’ll miss] the fact that it was probably one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. The fact that I’m a woman of a certain age who’s this ass-kicking action figure. It was a great job.

For Gomez, it’s been a wild ride. Coming in series 8 of the modern Doctor Who era, Gomez gender bent Master was just as insane as John Simms version, only with a “Mary Poppins from hell” kind of vibe. But we also saw an even closer relationship between the Doctor and Master. She’s teamed up with all of the Doctor’s greatest foes, from Daleks to Cybermen, and was the catalyst for Clara’s loss of the love of her life. But she’s still be extremely enteraining.

Now that Gomez is leaving along with Capaldi and Moffat, she’s going to likely be going out with a bang, since news is that Missy will be teaming up with John Simms Master in a crossover timeline episode that will pit the Doctor against them both. That’s sure create a ton of fireworks.

doctor-who-season-10-trailerBut if there really is going to be a clean slate, that will create a problem when it comes to Pearle Mackie’s portrayal of Bill. After only four episodes, fan sites in the UK are saying that Mackie’s Bill, and her unique way of looking at traveling with the Doctor, has breathed new life into the Capaldi era and has given fans a glimpse of what could have been.

That also means that she’s breathed new life into outgoing show runner Steven Moffat’s writing as well. Doctor Who has picked his companion to travel with, seen her experience the TARDIS for the first time, and has become a kind of benevolent caretaker for his companion again.

And it’s been marvelous, especially when he’s sacrificed to save her like we saw in the episode Oxygen. The stakes have been raised and there’s still plenty to come. But the sad part is, that Bill may be on her way out along with Capaldi, Gomez, and the rest of the gang. But it’s bound to be one of the best outgoing seasons yet.

Doctor Who 10thIn other Doctor Who News, Tennant, and Billie Piper are reuniting to reprise their rolls for a series of audio dramas by Big Finish. Known as The Tenth Doctor Adventures – Volume 2, the Doctor and Rose Tyler will be battling an alien invasion, taking on the Ice Warriors, and will travel back in time to meet Chevalier D’Eon, a British spy who lived life as a woman. In addition, an enterprising Doctor Who fan compiled an extensive list on Reddit of previous Big Finish Who adventures that you can now listen to on Spotify.

And if that’s not enough from the Whovian universe, you can also fly the TARDIS in virtual reality with the game Doctor Who Time Vortex 360!

So in this final season of the Capaldi era, while some familiar faces are leaving, there’s plenty opportunities to get your Doctor Who fix.
