Last week, Apple updated Final Cut Pro X and Compressor; mostly to fix bugs but with a few new features thrown in.

Here’s a list of what’s new, in both features and bug fixes and some initial comments on what’s working and what isn’t.

FINAL CUT PRO X (v. 10.3.3)

  2. Diamond icon displayed in Timeline when user modifies Roles display
  3. More color options in the Roles editor
  4. Support for Canon Log 3 and Sony S-Log3/S-Gamut3 media processing

Bugs fixed

  1. Fixes issue with updating older libraries
  2. Faster redraw of audio waveforms when using clips that are being imported while recorded to disk
  3. Reveal in Browser correctly displays the location of the original clip in the Browser
  4. Resolves an issue in with the Viewer could occasionally disappear when exiting full screen mode
  5. Resolves an issue in which Share to DVD could become unresponsive
  6. Improves font quality of DVD menu and chapter titles
  7. Improves image quality when creating a DVD
  8. Enhanced DVD User dialog messages with embedded links to documentation.

Comments

Of all the complaints I received from the original 10.3 update, DVD burning was at the top of the list. Apple made some changes with all their updates, but this is the most extensive series of fixes so far.

Let me know if you still have problems burning DVDs after this Final Cut Pro X update.

COMPRESSOR

Features

  1. Command line options for monitoring job status
  2. Dithering option adds noise to images to minimize distracting patters such as color banding
  3. Option, when creating iTunes Store package, to identify health warning text as required by Indian law
  4. Support for animated PNG and animated GIF image sequences

Bugs Fixed

  1. Improves watermark image quality
  2. Timecode filter is accurately displayed against drop-frame media
  3. Fixes sync issue for audio transcoded to AC-3
  4. Resolves an issue in which Share to DVD could become unresponsive
  5. Improves font quality of DVD menu and chapter titles
  6. Improves image quality when creating a DVD
  7. Enhanced DVD User dialog messages with embedded links to documentation.

Comments

There good and bad news here. Based on my immediate testing, the watermark issue is not yet fixed. Text quality remains poor when a Photoshop watermark is “burned” into the video using the Watermark effect. This broke with the 4.3 update and remains buggy.

On the other hand, Richard Hale sent me an email this morning saying: “This update (13 April 2017) of Compressor fixes the broken importing of sequential files. Hurray!”

MOTION

Motion was updated to version 5.3.2, and the fixes include:

  1. Fill filter lets you quickly fill an entire layer without requiring separate layer and mask
  2. Missing plug-ins are identified correctly when opening a project
  3. Midtones are represented accurately when using the Color Balance filter
  4. Improves stability when scaling shapes from or to zero
  5. Improves stability when working with duplicated rigged filters and behaviors
  6. Fixes a stability issue that could occur when using keyboard shortcuts while a keyframe is selected in the Keyframe Editor
  7. Improves stability when moving the cursor across markers during playback

SUMMARY

Updates are free and available in the Updates section of the Mac App Store.

You can try Final Cut Pro X free for 30 days, and the price is only $299. Download the FCP X trial here. Add Motion and Compressor, each $49!
