What’s going on with Ben Affleck’s The Batman? At this point your guess is as good as mine. After it looked like everything was going well for the upcoming film, Affleck backtracked to the point of saying he wouldn’t even make the film if he didn’t think it would be any good.
On the flip side, the film looked like it was moving forward, and could even take Justice League 2’s release date. Now, while speaking to IGN (via Screen Rant), Affleck added more positive news about the film. Here’s what he told the outlet:
“It’s the same thing as any other movie. When I’m excited about it, we’re working on the scripts, when we get there we’re gonna make it. I’m really excited. There’s great stuff in it now, it just needs to get better and better.
“And it’s the same way I felt about [Live By Night] when I was prepping it, it’s just that no one was asking me questions because nobody gave a s***, because there wasn’t any click-throughs. But it took me a year plus to get this movie ready to launch. Hopefully it won’t take me that long for Batman. But we’re working, I think we’re ahead of the curve, and we’re excited.”
Affleck also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel and said more or less the same thing. You can watch what he said in the video, or read what he said (via Entertainment Weekly) below.
“I’m gonna direct the next Batman. We’re working on it. It’s one of those things that’s really frustrating — with Live by Night, it took me a year-and-a-half to write it and get it ready and I worked really hard, and nobody gave a sh–. No one was like, ‘Where’s Live by Night?!’ But with Batman I keep on getting, ‘Where’s the f—ing Batman?!’ and I’m like, ‘I’m working! Can you give me a second?!'”
Are your hopes up? Good, I’m about to knock them back down a peg or two. According to Batman On Film, Warner Bros. and Affleck have delayed production on The Batman by a couple of months. No reason is given, but tucked in that report is the rumor that Justice League is “a mess.”
I will speculate that it seems The Batman has screenplay issues of some kind, and Affleck’s comments reflect that. The new quotes from the actor/writer/director seems to be more about damage control than anything else, but it seems to me like they’re just taking their time to draft something of quality and substance. Suicide Squad was rushed into production with a screenplay that David Ayer only had six weeks to complete, so I would call this a step in the right direction.
As to whether Justice League is actually a mess, all I can do is point at the quality of the previous DC Extended Universe films — two of which were also directed by Zack Snyder, who is helming Justice League (and due in November). I really hope lessons were learned, but on a quality scale, the DCEU is batting around zero. Here’s to hoping Wonder Woman rights some wrongs in July, but rumors say there could also be problems.
