Not long after NAB 2016, RED announced they wouldn’t have a booth at the confab in 2017, instead choosing to stay local for Cine Gear. For the cinema camera company, it’s quite literally down the street. But there’s also another benefit to showcasing your wares in Hollywood: You are a very big fish in a small, dedicated pond.

“Every year before NAB we would be completely consumed and push for no other reason rather than it was just expected… meanwhile customers that we were supporting during NAB would always suffer, and then on top of that, it would take at least a month of recovery after NAB for us to get our heads back into the game. [At] Cine Gear we will have a booth… but it is going to be just for fun… a much more focused show for Film than NAB.” – Jarred Land, Facebook

From the looks of it, RED really wants to get up close and personal with those who use their gear, rather than spend time and money to show off something flashy. It’s like going back to your roots and spending some time with your prime demographic in their natural habitat: FILMMAKERS! And that’s where RED lives. So it makes complete sense.

CG_MAPv4But while Land says their booth is just going to be for fun, that doesn’t mean they aren’t getting down to business. As the prime exhibitor at Cine Gear, RED is giving shooters a hands on interaction with their line of DSMC2 cameras, including the SCARLET-W, RED EPIC-W, WEAPON 8K S35 and WEAPON 8K Vista Vision.

They will also be demonstrating their new IPP2 image processing workflow, HDR, and 8K applications, as well as partner manufacturers for accessories by RT Motion, Kippertie, foolcontrol, and Offhollywood.

But Cine Gear isn’t just about booths and playing with gear. RED is also planning to have several panels with experts including a chat with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director of photographer Henry Braham about how filmmakers are going large format right now with RED’s WEAPON Vista Vision. In addition writer-director Dean Devlin will be there; he and his team are shooting their latest project on the RED WEAPON with HELIUM 8K cinema camera.

The next panel includes documentary director Nicholas Schrunk of Red Bull Media House, who will be talking about his Vietnam war documentary, Bloody Road. Shot on RED, the film journey is about endurance mountain bike athlete Rebecca Rusch. She biked down the Ho Chi Minh Trail in search of the crash site and final resting place of her father, an Air Force Pilot shot down over Laos. Schrunk and the Red Bull Media Team will discuss the technical process of choosing the cameras they did, the creative workflow, and how the story came together visually.

All in all, it looks to be a great weekend for REDheads, who want to get an inside look of using the cameras and the new IPP2 workflow, and for getting a sneak peek of what may be coming over the horizon, without having to battle the heavy crowds of NAB. Frankly, the smaller setting is going to be a blast.

Cine Gear will run Thursday June 1st to Sunday June 4th at Paramount Studios, with exhibits running June 2-3rd. The RED Booth is at Stage 2, S301. For more information, visit CineGearExpo.com or RED.com.
