A Geek’s Reaction To Marvel’s The Defenders Trailer

For the past two-plus years, Marvel and Netflix have been building their own corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist have led up Marvel’s The Defenders, and we’ve finally received our first look at the upcoming event crossover series.

Netflix has just dropped the first trailer for The Defenders, and it looks amazing! But don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself:

That one quick shot of them fighting in the hallway near the end is fantastic, and I hope that it’s just the tip of the iceberg. It seems that right behind them is a resurrected Elektra who hasn’t yet joined the fight, so it seems she’s on their side — at least for a while. From what we’ve learned from the previous four series, when someone is brought back to life they’re not quite whole again, so it’s unclear what effect that will have on the character.

It also seems to hint that the characters will be paired up at first with Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones crossing paths on the one hand, and Luke Cage and Iron Fist on the other (harkening back to their comic book roots). The characters riffing off of each other seems to feel very natural, and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist seems to work better in the context of this team.

I’m still unsure who Sigourney Weaver is playing. Even though the showrunners have said there is no comic book equivalent for the character, I don’t believe it for one second. Interestingly, her henchmen don’t look like The Hand, but it could be that they’re just dressed in suits. All-in-all, that was one exciting introduction to the team!

Marvel/Netflix’s The Defenders will premiere on Netflix this summer on August 18, 2017 at 12:01 am PT. Here’s the official synopsis:

Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), a quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, who realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.
