Marvel Studios plays the long game with films announced far in advance. Captain Marvel has been sitting in the docket with its star Brie Larson for a while now, but no one has yet been attached to helm the film. Last year, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige believed they would have a director for that film locked down by the end of 2016. Obviously, that didn’t happen.

Now, the director for the final film in the phase three cycle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been revealed. In fact, two directors have been tapped to direct Captain MarvelAnna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind, have been hired to helm the film. Along with those films, the duo also directed a bunch of TV shows, which includes episodes of Showtime’s Billions. Here’s what Marvel Studios said in a statement:

“Carol Danvers has a very nuanced, powerful story, so Marvel took time selecting the final directing duo. But ultimately Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s diverse body of work and ability and focus on character made the choice a winning one. Each of their films exhibit nuanced, fascinating performances and a deeply-felt sense of character, all which will fuel the pairs passion around telling Carol Danvers’ Story.”

Feige spoke to Fandango, discussed the hiring of the two directors (via Screen Rant):

“We met with lots and lots of people as we always do, and had multiple meetings, and Anna and Ryan just had an amazing way of talking about Carol Danvers and talking about her journey. We want filmmakers that can help us focus on and elevate the character journey so it doesn’t get lost amongst the spectacle. And there’s going to be a lot of spectacle in the Captain Marvel film.

“We’re pretty good at that at Marvel Studios, and have an amazing team that can help with that. But when we’re filling a director chair or chairs, we want people who are focused on the emotional journey, the humor, the surprising twists and turns of a singular character journey, which is what Captain Marvel is. They had the best handle on it. And when you look at the work that Ryan and Anna have done in the past, they are all amazing and very diverse character studies and journeys, and that impressed us.”

Getting Captain Marvel right is a fairly tough thing, considering that they’re creating a new origin for the character. Hiring Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck is a very interesting pick, since they come from a very indie film vibe that reminds me of Ryan Coogler, who the studio hired to direct Black Panther. Even though Marvel has more or less set a tone for the MCU, they seem to be bringing in strong voices to add different flavors to the movies.

Boden and Fleck have a great sense of drama and comedy that will serve Captain Marvel well. That said, the duo don’t have that much experience with action, which is a huge part of a Marvel movie. However, there’s not too much to be worried about just yet, when you consider that Anthony and Joe Russo were basically best known for directing episodes of Community before being hired to helm Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Just look at them now, directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 back-to-back. Who Marvel hires to direct their films are always surprising but they tend to really get it right.

Captain Marvel will premiere in theaters on March 8, 2019.
