The Defenders (Luke Cage, Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist)

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage are possibly my favorite superhero television series of all time. What makes them even better is that what the Marvel Cinematic Universe did on the big screen, these shows (along with the upcoming Iron Fist) are doing it on the small screen. And now they’re coming together to form The Defenders, Netflix and Marvel’s new show.

Getting any news out about The Defenders is proving difficult, but Entertainment Weekly has unwrapped a bunch of images and plot teases for us to finally sink our teeth into. First up is the long time question of who Sigourney Weaver is playing. The outlet reports that she is playing a character named Alexandra, which showrunner Marco Ramirez describes as an “utter badass.” Here’s what else he reveals about the character:

“Sigourney is the kind of person you can buy as the smartest person in the room, who you can also buy as a person holding a flamethrower. Her character is a very powerful force in New York City. She’s everything Sigourney is: Sophisticated, intellectual, dangerous. I’m sorry. I can only say a bunch of adjectives right now.”

I guess that pretty much kills my theory that Weaver would be playing Mephisto, although it still leaves a question mark regarding who Alexandra is. EW says the character has no code name and no comic book history, but Bleeding Cool has a theory that she could be either a new version or daughter of the Daredevil character Alexander Bont, who was the Kingpin before Wilson Fisk. That sounds like a good possibility, but that character had no connection to The Hand.

The outlet also released a series of images, which you can see in the gallery below:

So what brings these characters together? Showrunner Ramirez reveals that it would need to be something huge, saying:

“We knew it would take something massive to pull these four characters from their individual worlds to work together, but also small enough that it felt like it existed in our world.”

EW also reveals the scene which they meet, where all four characters are following their own leads and wind up trapped in a corridor at Midland Circle, surrounded by enemies, and must brawl their way out. These series do love their hallway brawls. Ramirez continues:

“Every one of them is following their own trail of bread crumbs, trying to unpack a mystery in New York. We wanted them all caught off guard. Once they’re in that room together, it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, s—, who are you?”

Finally, EW also released a video where Finn Jones (who plays Iron Fist) revealed an interesting tidbit about his character. Here’s what he said:

“Danny Rand is the one that knows really what’s going on. He knows how serious the situation is. Danny Rand, he’s the one that kind of drives the group to get **** done, really.”

I wonder how much of the plot of Iron Fist will set up the events in The Defenders, which will premiere before the team-up series on March 17.

One final tidbit comes from The Hollywood Reporter. According to their sources, The Defenders will arrive on the small screen sometime in June 2017, which means it should hit the small screen before The Punisher series. I guess that will kick off the next phase of the Marvel/Netflix corner of the MCU, and should debut in the fall.
