Guardians of the Galaxy took the pop culture world and box office by storm when in premiered back in 2014. It performed well beyond expectations, turned a mostly unknown comic book into a household name, and it launched Chris Pratt into superstardom.
There’s a lot of expectations for the sequel, but everything we’ve seen from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has looked fantastic so far. Now USA Today has gotten there hands on a bit more to look at, with a bunch of new images from the film. Check those out in the gallery below:
Most of those images are from scenes we’ve seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailers before, so there’s not much new information to glean from them. Fortunately, the outlet also had a chance to talk to the cast and crew which revealed a few new details.
Sequels are notoriously difficult to get right, and Marvel has been no exception. James Gunn says the only way to make a successful sequel is to take risks, and has promised to give us a different film from the first. Here’s what he said:
“The first movie was successful because we took chances and gave people the unexpected. This movie can only really be what it is, Guardians can only be what they are, if they’re taking a risk. It means giving them a much different movie.”
We still haven’t seen Kurt Russell as Quill’s father Ego the Living Planet (other than the Funko figure seen to the right via /Film), but the image of Mantis and Drax is interesting. In the article, it’s mentioned that the two of them become friends, so I wonder if they’re being paired up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It’s also revealed that while Rocket will act as Baby Groot’s father figure, Gamora will also figure in as his mother figure.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will premiere in theaters on May 5, 2017. Here’s the official synopsis for the upcoming film:
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
