New Justice League Trailer: World Without A Superman

At New York Comic Con, Warner Bros. unleashed a brand new Justice League trailer, highlighting a world without Superman, and the heroes who team up to save the world from villain Steppenwolf. Take a look:

The DCEU has launched and is growing with films Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Wonder Woman, and now the first team-up movie is coming at us. With Superman’s death at the hands of Doomsday in Batman V Superman, the world sees crime and terrorism growing. And with it comes an even bigger threat to the planet: Steppenwolf and his ‘parademons.’

We see a worldwide expanse in the new Justice League trailer, but it starts off with a dream (or flashback?) of Lois (Amy Adams) and Clark (Henry Cavill) in Smallville, and they are engaged. It quickly cuts to Lois waking up alone in bed. We see different shots of the heroes and the coming threat (“Invasion,” as Diana remarks), and Steppenwolf unleashes the “Hellspores,” which according to Screen Rant are, “Hellspores, the devices used by Apokoliptians to turn a world into a flaming wasteland of firepits to fuel Apokolips and its leader, Darkseid.” So there’s THAT setup, too.

Plenty of over-the-top CGI action shots and more round out the trailer, plus some humorous moments. Honestly, I think Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) will be the highlights of Justice League, and if it happens, the Return of Superman. The reason why I say, “If it happens,” is because though we’ve discussed the inevitability of Clark returning to help defeat the new threat to the planet, with all the re-writes, it could  be smaller than we think. Just a guess based on all the Justice League reshoot discussions. I’m probably wrong.

There isn’t as much of set-up like the first Justice League trailer from 2016, and the one from SDCC this year. But it does show team dynamics, humor, and heroism in the light of a battle for the Earth. Which, I hate to say this, we’ve seen several times already in numerous other films (The Avengers, Man of Steel, etc.). I hope this will be a fresh take, especially after how awful Batman V Superman was when it debuted in March 2016; let’s hope the quality is more on par with Wonder Woman, which was the blockbuster hit of the year.

Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the film after Zack Snyder and his family faced a tragic time, and the reshoots are reportedly extensive. How much of the film will change from Snyder’s original vision may never be known, but the script rewrites are enough that Whedon now has a co-writer credit with Chris Terrio (Argo) and Snyder.

Justice League is officially directed by Snyder (with reshoots and script rewrites) by Whedon, and stars Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, J.K. Simmons, Amy Adams, and Jeremy Irons. It opens November 17, 2017.

Here’s an official plot for Justice League:

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
