New Ghost in the Shell Trailer Drops!

I really love Ghost in the Shell, but I’m not a die hard fan of the property. Some people might want to pull my geek card for saying that, but in my defense, I’ll say that I think Serial Experiments Lain was a much more adult anime that dealt with similar themes.

Because I’ve always thought of Ghost in the Shell as a slightly more juvenile story than Lain, I guess that is part of the reason why I’m really excited for the Hollywood remake. Sure, this seems like an over simplification of the anime’s themes, but it looks fantastic and I think Scarlett Johansson is always seriously underrated.

For those of you who have already written this film off, this new Ghost in the Shell trailer will do nothing for you. I, however, could not wait to sink my teeth in it! Check it out below:

It looks like we have our big bad, and it seems to be Kuze. Or Section 9 in a government conspiracy of some kind. I actually expected it to be the Puppet Master, but either way there seems to be alterations to the antagonist and protagonist.

The Major (Johansson) was always meant to be more machine than most cyborgs, and despite having a few more enhancements than normal people, she wasn’t anything special. This adaptation is making her a unique creature — or at least that is what we were led to believe before this trailer.

Ghost in the Shell is going down the dystopian secret cabal rabbit hole with illegal projects on human beings. Kuze has turned out to be an earlier version of the same project that The Major was part of. I have no problems with any of that. What is drawing my ire is once again we get a trailer that spoils all of the big things from the film (maybe not as bad as the last Terminator trailer spoilers, but still… ). Section 9 is corrupt, and she isn’t a special snowflake.

There are also a few visual upgrades to scenes we had already seen, like The Major breaking through the glass, but this time she’s invisible. The slow motion effect of her running on the wall also shows some kind of glitch effect when she swings her arm. I’m not sure what all that is about.

Ghost in the Shell will premiere in theaters on March 31, 2017. Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic¹s advancements in cyber technology.
