Stranger Things was the sleeper hit of summer 2016. It harkened back to some of my favorite movies of the 80s, and really understood the tone of those films so well that at times it felt like I was watching a forgotten movie from the era. Fortunately, it eas such a success that Netflix greenlit a second season, and then later announced an October release.

Now we know exactly when the next season of Stranger Things will hit the streaming service. Netflix released a brand new poster and a quick teaser video with the new date. You can see the poster below:

The teaser was released via Twitter, and you can see that below:

The trailer that was released during the Super Bowl earlier this year teased the shadow of a giant tentacle monster that was hanging around in the clouds. The shot was very reminiscent of Steven Spielberg’s classic scene in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (and one of my all time favorite films), where the child opens the door to see a UFO. It seems that that creature will be the second season’s key monster, replacing the Demogorgon from the first.

Both the Duffer Brothers and the cast have been promising a much darker season that will build upon what has come before. It’s really hard to even speculate how they’ll top that first season, or how they’ll avoid the sophomore slump most event television shows go through. However, we do know that the Duffers were working with so many plot ideas in this season, that a few of them were pushed to season three. So one thing that we know is there is probably no shortage of surprises coming our way.

It is a little bit early to start wondering about the endgame for Stranger Things, but I can’t help think about it. This season picks up about a year after the previous season, and considering the ages of some of the cast, they’ll probably continue with that. We’ve heard the series will probably last five seasons, which makes the story end somewhere in 1987.

I also wonder about the homages to other films. Season 2 features the kids dressing up as Ghostbusters for Halloween, as that was the big movie at the time. I wonder if season 3 we’ll see something that alludes to Back to the Future, Goonies, and Breakfast Club, which were big hits that year.

Stranger Things season two will premiere on October 27th, 2017 on Netflix. Here is the official synopsis for the second season:

It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the demagorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.
