RØDE is celebrating the 50th year of their parent company, Freedman Electronics, by launching the biggest My RØDE Reel short film competition ever, with over a half million dollars in prizes. So break out your RØDE gear, grab a camera and get in on the game! Here’s how.

We’re extremely excited to launch the fourth year of My RØDE Reel in 2017. The quality of the films we receive gets better every year. The inclusion of the Female Filmmaker category last year doubled the number of women shooting and submitting films – a feat we hope to repeat this year.” – Damien Wilson, RØDE’s CEO

myrodereel2017The main thing you need to know about the My RØDE Reel competition is that you have to make a short film of three minutes or less, and a behind-the-scenes video that prominently features how you used your RØDE product in the creation of your video.

The competition has several different genres to contend in, including:

  1. Drama
  2. Horror
  3. Comedy
  4. Documentary
  5. Action
  6. Non-English
  7. SCI-FI
  8. Music Video

In addition, RØDE is adding VLOG, Virtual Reality, and a special 30-second television commercial where contestants can create a RØDE TV Commercial to advertise the product they are using.

“The new categories – Best VR film, Best RØDE TVC and Best Vlog reflect the way creators are evolving the short film format, said Wilson. “We are really excited about the possibilities these categories hold for us this year and into the future. And we couldn’t resist asking our talented customers for a cool RØDE TV commercial.” This year’s judges include Tim Ross, Matilda Brown, Philip Bloom, Ric Viers, and Genevieve Bailey.

Awards will be given in five major categories: Judges Film Award, People’s Choice, the Young Filmmaker award for contestants under the age of 18, and best female filmmaker award. There will also be awards given for best behind the scenes award with the prizes split this year between the most educational behind the scenes, and the most entertaining.

There will also be a new prize initiative for the major category winners, which will include membership in the RØDE Directors Club. This exclusive club will give members access to every new Broadcast and Filmmaking category microphone RØDE releases for the next three years, pre-release. That’s a very cool incentive if you’re a gadget geek like me.

Now that you know what you can win and how, here’s how you enter: Go to the official site, and at the bottom of the page, there is a email form to fill out in order to register. When you do, you will be given access to the free My RØDE Reel starter pack . Then it’s just a matter making your three minute short film, your three minute behind-the-scenes video featuring the RØDE product used, and submitting both as a package. It couldn’t be easier.

Entries for My RØDE Reel are open between March 1st and midnight on June 30th, Austalian Eastern Standard Time. This is important, because it means if you’re on the other side of the globe, the contest will actually end of Jun 29th, since you have to deal with the International dateline!
