Super Bowl 51 is in the books, the Patriots won in the first overtime (with a huge comeback), and plenty of great new trailers debuted. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Stranger Things Season 2, Logan, Ghost in the Shell, Transformers: The Last Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and more were well represented! Let’s dive in!

Here’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2:

Loads of new peeks into new scenes but we STILL don’t get a chance to see Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet. Mostly, this trailer confirms that the Guardians team is getting a whole lot bigger with Yondu, Nebula, and Mantis joining up with the original five characters from the first movie.

Stranger Things Season 2 (debuting Halloween):

This trailer is the one that shows the least but potentially reveals the most. First of all, yes, the boy in that Eggo commercial is Jason Hervey who played Kevin Arnold’s brother in The Wonder Years. We also get a brief look at the monster in season two and it looks like a massive tentacle monster straight out of H.P. Lovecraft. With the tagline for the season “the world is turning upside down” it pretty much confirms that our world is becoming more like the Upside-Down. Also, that shot of Will Byers opening the door is lifted directly from one of my all time favorite movies Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I love all the homages in this series!

Transformers: The Last Knight:

Just what is going on with this film? It is actually looking… good. I’m pretty sure that giant moon thing is Unicron as it is eating the Earth but who is the woman’s voice that Optimus Prime identifies as his maker? Is that Unicron or is what we’re looking at the Transformers’ creator Primus which lives at the heart of Cybertron? Considering how much the previous movies haven’t really stuck to the canon, it really is anyone’s guess.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:

I’m just shocked by how little Johnny Depp we’ve seen in any of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales material. I think this is the first time we see Jack Sparrow say anything at all in this film. I think we also get our first look at Orlando Bloom and he’s seen better days with barnacles growing out of the side of his head. Loving the use of Johnny Cash here.

Logan:

There’s something final about everything I’ve ever seen in this film. It has a very spaghetti western kind of look which looks nothing like any of the other X-Men films. Honestly, if you weren’t looking forward to this movie before then this trailer won’t change your mind. But if you don’t like this (or any of the other trailers) then I’m not sure we can be friends.

Ghost in the Shell:

I can’t help but notice how well crafted this film is, taking loads of cues from the original anime film. Even the theme music is a recomposed version from the anime. Not much new is shown here other than different shots from scenes we’ve seen in previous trailers.

The Fate of the Furious:

Big. Dumb. Movie. I’m not saying that as a disparaging remark as I’ve become a fan of the Furious series over the course of the past few years. The series knows that it is a soap opera with fast cars and impossible stunts which it gleefully relishes in. Every time a new movie comes out the trailers show how they’ll top the ludicrous action from the film that came out before.

Baywatch:

I’m not sure how I feel about this film. I loved what Phil Lord and Chris Miller did with 21 Jump Street and this looks like it’ll take cues from that movie. It could be a hit or miss film but I did laugh at Zac Efron deadpanning that he’s wearing freedom. Could go either way.
