TFC Legal — Flat Fee Legal Services for Indie Filmmakers

The most common problem first time filmmakers have with making movies is distribution. Many films are made without the producers even thinking about distribution– even the Coen Brothers‘ first film Blood Simple was made without any idea of how they were going to sell it.

The Film Collaborative was conceived as a place where filmmakers could get help to distribute their films, and they’ve just added a new service called TFC Legal.

Abrams Garfinkel Margolis Bergson, a law firm based out of New York and Los Angeles, will offer negotiation, business affairs and contract assistance to filmmakers in the process of making their distribution deals. The key to all of this is that they’ll do it for a flat fee as opposed to hourly billing.

The face of distribution has been changing dramatically over the last number of years and the agreements have become a bit muddied, so this is a perfect service for those in the process of negotiating. “This new service pairs our expertise in distribution, particularly digital distribution, with AGMB’s extensive experience in entertainment law, in order to achieve the best results for TFC clients,” said the Film Collaborative’s founder and co-executive director Orly Ravid, “TFC Legal will advise on exactly which rights are being granted to the distributor and for which platforms, without taking control of the filmmaker/content creator’s rights, as traditional sales agencies do.”

Obviously, TFC Legal offers a very specific service and doesn’t cover all of your legal needs for a film, but it does save you a few pennies during the negotiation process for distribution.
