Will the Indominus Rex Return for Jurassic World 2?

Jurassic World Indominus RexBy Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

One of the central sticking points of Jurassic World was whether audiences would accept the Indominus Rex hybrid creature for the film. When the news was unofficially revealed, there was some fan backlash — from me as well — but thankfully Colin Trevorrow somehow managed to make it all work in a thrilling way.

In the end, the creature was defeated by basically borrowing the climax for a Godzilla movie, and having a Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus Rex take him out. But is that the last we’ll ever see of the Indominus Rex? Possibly not.

A new piece of promo art for Jurassic World 2 seems to tease the return of the Indominus. The image comes from License Global (via Screen Rant) and you can check it out below!

It is hard to be certain that this is, in fact, the Indominus Rex, but it does bear a resemblance to the hybrid dinosaur. B.D. Wong’s character Dr. Henry Wu escaped the island with a bunch of dino embryos, so I assume he was still planning on making more of them in Jurassic World 2. The actor will be back for the next film, so this seems very possible. Considering how much havoc this creature wrought on the island theme park, you would figure they would pause and reconsider.

Having said that, the entire franchise is thematically built on that hubris, so they probably don’t. The next movie will deal with militarizing dinosaurs (to some degree), so I can see someone in the military frothing at the mouth to get his hands on something like that, which can cause all kinds of havoc for an enemy. There were hints of smaller versions of the Indominus Rex being made for military use from Jurassic World, so that’s a possibility, too.

Another possibility (other than this isn’t the Indominus Rex in the image) is the hybrid dinosaur doesn’t appear in the next movie at all. They could have just had a cool image from the previous movie lying around and mocked something up.

So right now we know that Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum, and possibly the Indominus Rex are all coming back for the sequel. I can’t shake the suspicion that Sam Neill and Laura Dern may either pop up in this movie or possibly the next one. Trevorrow planned it as a trilogy and the one thing we haven’t seen yet in these sequels is the entire gang back together.

Jurassic World 2 will premiere in theaters on June 22, 2018 from director J.A. Bayona.
