Sad news today as beloved actor Andy Griffith has passed away at the age of 86, according to TV station WITN in North Carolina. The star of The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, Griffith’s popularity spanned generations and delighted fans around the country and world. In addition to acting, Griffith was a producer, director, writer and singer, a regular on the Ed Sullivan Show before becoming “America’s favorite sheriff” Andy Taylor, starring alongside Don Knotts and a young Ron Howard.

Griffith also starred in the immensely popular Matlock, which aired from 1986 to 1995, which started on NBC, but moved to ABC in 1992, playing criminal attorney Ben Matlock. The show was a hit with all age groups, but especially seniors, since Matlock was an older, wise attorney doing good work for his clients. In 2005, he won the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented by George W. Bush, and was still active in entertainment.

We’ll have more on Andy’s life and career soon.
