Doritos’ 2014 Crash the Super Bowl Contest is Going to be Marvelous

$1 Million price plus a gig with Marvel

The 2014 Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest is in full swing and this year has a most decidedly “marvelous” grand prize … $1 Million cash, a trip to Super Bowl XLVIII and a gig working on the crew of Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Sounds like a contest worth tryin’ for!  But you have to hurry, convest ends November 24th.

Your Crash the Super Bowl ad must be exactly 30 seconds long and not contain any copyrighted works other than what is owned by the contest entrant (you) and the Sponsor … Doritos.  The Video Size must also be kept under 100 MB for encoding and uploading.  All finalists will be required to provide higher resolution versions for consideration to be broadcast on Super Bowl Sunday, so make sure you keep a HiRes version ready to go.

Additionally, all submissions must be shot in widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio that is center cut protected.  In addition, entrants will be expected to provide Doritos with original audio and video files used during production of the entry for broadcast purposes, presumably to recut should it be necessary.

The cool thing is, that Doritos gives you a ton of tools to really make your Super Bowl Ad awesome and give it a professional feel.  Users can go to the Doritos website and download a 1.38GB suite of Creator Assets that include logos, package art, sound effects, and royalty free music and video blogs designed for After Effects that will take your Doritos Storm the Super Bowl Ad over the top.

Users can also download the official rules and FAQ which let’s creative teams know what to expect from the submission process. For instance, teams can submit up to 10, 30 second entries.  These can be ten different cuts of your ad, or ten different ads, your choice (like you have the time to shoot more than one!).

However, entrants will only be eligible for one prize per person/household.  There are a ton of other rules that you must be familiar with, so it’s a good idea to download them and give them a good read over.

And before you think you can get Stan Lee or put an Marvel Characters into your Doritos ad, that is an emphatic no-no, as no Marvel, NFL, or any other 3rd party assets can be used.  Only those that are available in the Creator’s assets from Doritos.  But you may use any Doritos brand Tortilla chips, preferably those with bold bag colors.

Additionally, former winners Sam and Niko of Corridor Digital have released a video that gives you tips on how to turn your video up to eleven.  These tips include getting a hook that draws users to watch, rather than get up and use the head or get a fresh beer.  Then there’s the punch line which pays off the idea and rewards viewers from watching.

“At the end of the day,” says Niko, “think of your commercial as a three panel comic strip in the newspaper. You’ll get the punchy, quick, to the point story that’ll be the perfect length.”   Additionally, show, don’t describe.  Make the description of the story visual, simple, and funny.  “You’ll notice that most comics are simplified,” says Sam, “that let’s people only focus on the hook you’re trying to convey.”  And Sam and Niko also says that using a common subject that everyone can relate to, that’s been amped with humor can make things really entertaining.

Here’s a breakdown of the prizes:

There will be three tiers of prizing:
  • SEMI-FINALISTS receive$1,000 USD.
  • FINALISTS: $25,000 USD and a trip to New York for a private Super Bowl XLVIII party hosted by DORITOS® for all Finalists.
  • FIRST AND SECOND GRAND PRIZE: The two (2) Grand Prize Winners’ Submissions will be aired during the Super Bowl XLVIII broadcast.   The First Grand Prize Winner
  • (who receives the most votes from among the Finalists) will receive a prize consisting of the Game Trip and $1,000,000 USD. The Second Grand Prize Winner(selected by the DORITOS® brand from among the Finalists) will receive a prize consisting of the Game Trip as well as $50,000 USD.
  • Additionally, the first and second grand prize winners will be invited to join the crew on the set of the upcoming Avengers movie, Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

All submissions are due by 11:59:59 pm CT on November 24 , 2013, with finalists announced on or about January 4, 2014.   The winning ads will be broadcast during the Super Bowl on February 2, 2014.  So now’s the time to “assemble” your crew and get your entry in!  You can view previous CtSB entries here.
