Sherlock Series to Return to the BBC in… 1.5 Years?

A bit of good news and a bit of bad news. The BBC’s highly entertaining series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch will be back for a fourth season! Unfortunately, it looks like it won’t be back until Christmas 2015.

BBC One has announced that they’re shooting a Sherlock special in January 2015 via Twitter with a hashtag of #221Back. The Christmas 2015 release date comes from an interview with Martin Freeman who plays Dr. Watson from the Telegraph where he said:

If that’s going to be a special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand

The Tweets officially announcing the return of Sherlock are below.

From the rest of the tweets made on their Twitter account, it looks like the special will deal with the cliffhanger ending of series 3, where Moriarty’s face appears on televisions across the UK saying “did you miss me?” over and over again. Whether that will continue into the fourth series, proper, remains to be seen and I have no idea how they can bring him back since he seemed quite definitively… um… shot in the head by the end of series 2.

Either Moriarty left some kind of post-death surprise behind for Holmes or someone is using his likeness for their own nefarious ends. Or there’s always the possibility that it was Moriarty’s twin who died on the rooftop. Series creators Mark Gatiss & Steven Moffat rarely go with a standard explanation and prefer far more unusual answers for questions and puzzles.

Want my explanation? How about this, we’ve met Jim Moriarty, but what if his name was James Moriarity Jr? He was never called Professor Moriarty so maybe we haven’t seen that character just yet. Revenge of the father using his son’s image to lure Holmes out into the open.

I really don’t believe that theory, but it would be fairly interesting if it were true! I can’t wait to see what the cast and crew of Sherlock have in store for us in the new season.

Sherlock (probably) returns to television December 2015 with a special followed by a fourth season sometime in 2016.
