What Will Katie Holmes Do Next?

Now that the dust is starting to settle on the biggest divorce of the year, Katie Holmes once again, has Hollywood at her feet.

Because before she tied the knot with Tom Cruise, Holmes had successfully broken away from the wholesome TV actress persona and forged herself as a genuine Hollywood star and an actress of substance.

She did this by taking roles in art house films such as Go and Pieces of April. Now, taking arty, more controversial roles is standard procedure when you are trying to make the transition from TV to film (see: nearly all of NBC’s The Office and Parks and Recreation cast seem to be in some indie film), whether it was through sheer luck or shrewdness that her choices paid off, only Miss Holmes and maybe her agent know the truth.

Then she landed Batman Begins, becoming part of an iconic billion dollar franchise and working with one of the hottest directors around. Of course, we all know what happened next, but in short she married Cruise and her career plummeted.

And, this professional nose dive happened almost immediately when she refused to reprise her role as Rachel Dawes in the Batman sequel The Dark Knight. This infuriated Warner Bros and director Christopher Nolan. Apparently she was offered, double, then triple her initial salary to take the role, as Nolan wanted continuity between the two episodes. However, for reasons not yet explained, she refused to do the film.

What followed was a lean period which she took a roles in poorly received genre films, such as horror movie Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (not scary) and Adam Sandler vehicle Jack and Jill (not funny).

And, now it will be interesting to see where her career goes from here. Of course, aside from still being an absolute knock out and hugely talented, the spot light is fixed firmly upon her, so good offers will come.

She is currently filming in New York on a project titled Molly, which she co-wrote and is producing, which follows, maybe not so coincidently, a single mother and her daughter.

A rather interesting comparison is Cruise’s second wife Nicole Kidman, whose career flourished after her divorce.

Despite not having the same level of fame as Holmes when she married Cruise in 1990, Kidman went onto work with some of the best directors in the world, earning millions and winning an Academy Award for Best Actress for The Hours. Not bad for a divorce settlement.

Whether Katie Holmes can replicate this kind of success is yet to be seen, however, if she takes this publicity, adverse or otherwise, and uses it, she could have a colossal career.
